The inspiration for the Fengqi Chang’an Aesthetics Museum is deeply rooted in nature and traditional Chinese gardens. The designers have drawn from elements of landscape paintings, focusing on mountains, forests, wind, and water. The layout of the museum is flexible, with characteristics such as reality and unreality, opening and closing, twists and turns, high and low, all playing a part in the overall design.
The unique properties of the museum lie in its combination of different sizes of functional forms. The architects have cleverly combined various courtyards and inlaid the elements of verandas to create a continuous, flexible, and rich garden space. The building is not just an exhibition hall, but also a space that enhances the visitor's experience in the garden. Courtyards are set up according to various functions, including display, communication, meditation, and activities, all interconnected through crisscrossed corridors.
The realization of the design was achieved through the extensive application of glass, large span of door leaf, and large size of overhanging eave. These elements blend together to form a continuous and orderly frame. With well-proportioned shapes, volumes of different sizes, and an orderly layout, the building meets various functional demands.
The project, which started in April 2019 in Chang'an, China, covers an area of 16,000 square meters with a building scale of 6,400 square meters. The designers faced the challenge of integrating the building into a modern living space and activity function while respecting the traditional garden spatial relationship, given the location's rich cultural heritage. The design is expected to be completed in 2021.
Lu Hao and Chen Jian's design is a testament to their ability to blend tradition with innovation. The Fengqi Chang’an Aesthetics Museum is more than just an exhibition hall; it is a space that respects and enhances the visitor's experience, all while maintaining a deep connection with traditional Chinese aesthetics. This design serves as a shining example of how architecture can be both functional and aesthetically pleasing, a true embodiment of the designers' prodigy and wisdom.
